A Town Made for the Camera

Few towns in America have spent as long in front of the camera as this barrier island. The portraits and pictures we make here join more than a century of it.

  • 1894 Henry Flagler opens the Royal Poinciana Hotel, and the winter season begins.
  • 1896 The oceanfront hotel that became The Breakers opens.
  • 1919 Addison Mizner and Paris Singer open the Everglades Club, and Mizner's Mediterranean style starts to shape the island.
  • 1927 Marjorie Merriweather Post completes Mar-a-Lago, designed by Marion Sims Wyeth and Joseph Urban.
  • 1936 The Society of the Four Arts is founded.
  • 1960s President Kennedy makes the family's oceanfront house his Winter White House.
  • Today Worth Avenue, the private clubs and the November to April charity season keep the island in the pictures.
